Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between freelance and contract work?
In both cases, you are considered self-employed. Freelancers typically take on short-term, project-based work and have to find their own clients. Contractors partner with staffing agencies like Design Humans to find longer term placements where they embed directly with an in-house team. At Design Humans, contract lengths vary from 3 months to 2+ years. In some cases, these opportunities can lead to full-time employment.
How much will I make? How often will I get paid?
Compensation depends on level, location and client. Hourly rates for US-based contractors are typically comparable with in-house salaries. Payment terms vary by client. In most cases, you will be paid on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.
What about health insurance?
As a self-employed individual, you are responsible for finding your own health insurance. We’ve sourced a short-list of recommended options and regularly host info sessions to demistify this aspect of working for yourself.
What types of roles do you fill?
At Design Humans, we focus solely on User Experience roles. This includes design leaders, UX designers, content designers, design ops practitioners and design researchers of all levels.
How do you evaluate candidates?
We are currently open to US-based applicants with 3-15+ years of experience. We are not able to provide visa sponsorship at this time. Previous experience working in-house and/or in an embedded capacity is preferred. To be selected, you will also need a standout portfolio that demonstrates a high level of visual craft, critical thinking and concise storytelling.
